Some Basics: 今日　＝　きょう　＝　Today　

Let's get this down, once and for all!!

 

By itself, of course

今 = いま　NOW　

But to make it "Today," we have to add "Day" 日

今日

今 is Also pronounced こん (今)　in compound

= "This" as in 今週　v　先週　("Last")

Or, 今ばん = this evening

 

Note: We now also have the kanji for "Come" or coming or "NEXT," 来 se we can say

来週 = らい　しゅう = literally, NEXT OR the "coming" week.

 

 

Back to 今日　

Going Back in Time we have

きのう = Yesterday　

おととい = Day before yesterday

 

Going forward it's

あした = Tomorrow　

あさって = Day after tomorow

 

We're 7 months in to studying Elementary Japanese. Any reason NOT to have these basic vocabs down???

 

Let's look at our Quizzes - OK, Kanji Quizzes are mainly about the kanji...but also it is a good chance to check/practice the new patterns we are working with...That's why I ask you to give the English for the sentence,

and also for revisiting/practicing how kanji kanji are used.

 

Our first sentence on the Quiz =

きょう、　くる　ひと　は　田中さん　

今日　　　来る　人　= the person coming today

 

Also, all 4 Interrogative Words + か were on the Quiz....

 

They will also be on the Chapter Test!! So, let's revisit them!　

 

３、どこか　へ　行きましょうか

= Shall we go SOMEWHERE?

１２、何か　読みましたか？

= Did you read SOMETHING?

１３、だれか　と　話しましたか？

= Did you talk to SOMEONE?

１４、どこか　で　コーヒーを　飲みましたか　

= Did you drink coffee SOMEWHERE?　

１７、いつか　出かけましょうか　

= Shall we go out SOMETIME?

Review Dialogue: At a Restaurant

Context:

今日は　土曜日です　

石田さん　と　上田さ と　山本さんは しぶやに　

あそびに　来ました = The 3 came to Shibuya for Fun

 

何か　食べませんか？ = Invitation Could also be,

何か　食べましょうか = Shall We east SOMETHING?

 

あそこは　どう　ですか？ HOW About over there?

イタリア　りょうり　ですね = it's an Italian Restaurant

いいですよ！

 

じゃあ　あそこに　しましょう= suggestion/proposition:

Let's decide on/make it over there

 

Key Question:

何　に　しましょうか = What shall we have?

このピザ　どう　ですか？= How about this...

おいしそう = It looks delicious

じゃあ　そう　しましょう = So...Let's do it that way...

 

ほか　に　何がいいですか

How about Fried Chicken?

飲みもの　は？

のどが　かわきましたから = I am thirsty so...

ビールに　しませんか？ = shall we have some beer?

 

何も　いりません = I don't need anything

水で　いいです = I am fine with water

 

Waiter: ごちゅうもんは？= Your order?　

3 ites (piza, chicken, beer) 〜を　おねがいします

Waiter repeates order:

ピザ一まい　と　

FC〜を　お一つ と　

ビール　二本

Grammar II Eliciting and Making Proposals =

Shall we?　〜ましょうか？　

Let's....　〜ましょう　

(Of course, the 〜ましょうか？ Proposal can be a 〜ませんか Invitation...)

But let's practice 〜ましょうか？ and 〜ましょう

 

Choose to say either "Shall we?" or "Let's..."

e.g.,

Shall we meet at the Bistro?

Let's meet at the Bistro

 

Go to Portland

Go Shopping

Eat Indian food

Go home

Drink coffee SOMEWHERE

Go to see a movie

Go into/Enter (入る) that Cafe
